Does a Root Canal Hurt? What to Expect from Single-Sitting RCT in Dugri, Ludhiana
By Dr. Urvi Raja, BDS · Dr. Urvi's Dental Hub, Ludhiana
"Root canal" might be the most feared phrase in dentistry. Many patients put off treatment for months because of stories they've heard from friends or family. Often the delay makes the problem worse, and the pain they're already living with is far worse than the treatment itself.
Here's an honest look at what a root canal involves, whether it hurts, and why many patients can now finish it in a single visit.
What is a root canal?
Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or an old filling lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected. That's what causes the throbbing, lingering pain many patients describe.
A root canal treatment (RCT) removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, and seals them. The tooth is saved instead of pulled out.
Signs you might need a root canal
Tooth pain that lingers, or wakes you up at night
Sensitivity to hot or cold that stays after the food is gone
Pain when biting or chewing
Swelling in the gum or face near a tooth
A tooth that has darkened in colour
A deep cavity or a broken tooth
Not every toothache means you need a root canal. A proper examination and X-ray will tell you what's really going on.
So, does it hurt?
The tooth is fully numbed before treatment begins, so most patients feel little or no discomfort during the procedure. Many tell us the treatment actually relieved the pain they came in with.
At our clinic, we pay special attention to the parts patients worry about most:
The injection: we use gentle injection techniques so the numbing step is as comfortable as possible.
Anxiety: for very nervous patients, conscious sedation is available. It helps you stay calm and relaxed while remaining awake.
Not knowing what's happening: Dr. Urvi explains each step before starting and checks on your comfort throughout.
It's normal for the tooth to feel slightly tender for a few days afterwards, which is usually managed easily with simple pain relief.
What is single-sitting root canal treatment?
Traditionally, a root canal took two, three or even more visits. Today, in many cases, the entire treatment can be completed in one sitting.
Benefits of single-sitting RCT:
Fewer trips to the clinic
Only one round of numbing
Less time off work or school
Treatment finished before the infection has a chance to worsen
Single-sitting RCT is one of Dr. Urvi's areas of special focus, and most root canals at our clinic are completed in one visit. Occasionally, a tooth with severe infection or swelling needs more than one visit to heal properly. If that's the case for you, you'll be told beforehand.
Do I need a cap after a root canal?
Often, yes. A tooth that has had a root canal can become weaker over time, especially back teeth that take heavy chewing pressure. A crown (cap) protects the tooth and helps it last for many years. Dr. Urvi will advise you on whether your tooth needs one.
What about children?
Children's teeth can need root canal treatment too. Dr. Urvi has treated children as young as two years old, using a calm, patient approach that never forces or frightens them.
Don't wait until it gets worse
Delaying a root canal can lead to a bigger infection, swelling, or losing the tooth altogether. The earlier it's treated, the simpler the treatment usually is.
