Scared of the Dentist? How Laughing Gas Helps Anxious Patients in Ludhiana
By Dr. Urvi Raja, BDS · Dr. Urvi's Dental Hub, Dugri, Ludhiana
If your heart starts racing just thinking about the dentist, you are not alone. Many of our patients tell us they delayed treatment for months, sometimes years, because of fear. Some are scared of the injection, some of the sound of the drill, and some had a bad experience as a child.
The good news: being scared does not have to stop you from getting the treatment you need. One of the gentlest ways we help anxious patients is with laughing gas, known in dentistry as nitrous oxide or conscious sedation.
Dentist se darr lagta hai? Aap akele nahi hain
Bahut saare log dentist ke paas jaane se darte hain: injection ka darr, awaaz ka darr, ya purane bure experience ki wajah se. Isliye hamare clinic mein laughing gas ki suvidha hai, jisse aap treatment ke dauraan shaant aur relaxed reh sakte hain.
What is laughing gas?
Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a mild gas mixed with oxygen that you breathe in gently through a small mask over your nose. Within a few minutes, most people feel calm, relaxed and less bothered by what is happening around them.
You stay awake. You can hear, talk and respond to the doctor throughout. It is not general anaesthesia, and you are not put to sleep.
No needle for the gas itself. You simply breathe normally through your nose.
It wears off quickly. Once the gas is stopped and you breathe oxygen for a few minutes, the effect fades. Most people feel normal again shortly after treatment.
It works alongside numbing. Laughing gas helps with fear and anxiety. The tooth is still numbed as usual, so most patients feel little or no discomfort.
Who can it help?
People who are very scared of the dentist or have avoided treatment for years
People who are afraid of injections or the sound of dental instruments
People with a strong gag reflex
Longer treatments, such as root canals or several treatments in one visit
Some anxious children, when Dr. Urvi feels it is suitable
Is it safe?
Laughing gas is one of the most widely used and gentlest forms of sedation in dentistry. Before using it, Dr. Urvi checks your health and medical history to make sure it is right for you. It is not suitable for everyone, and if it is not the best choice for you, she will explain other ways to keep you comfortable.
Common questions from nervous patients
Will I be asleep? No. You stay awake and relaxed, and can talk to the doctor at any time.
I'm scared of the injection. Can this help? Yes. Many patients find the numbing step much easier once they are relaxed with laughing gas, and we also use gentle injection techniques.
Can I get a root canal with laughing gas? Often, yes. It is commonly used for root canals, extractions and longer appointments where clinically suitable.
Looking for painless dental treatment? With numbing, a gentle approach and laughing gas for anxious patients, most of our patients tell us they felt far less discomfort than they expected.
